Google Expands AI Contrail-Avoidance Demo in Asia-Pacific

According to AI TIMES, Google DeepMind said it had estimated that the warming impact fell by about 40% in a demonstration with Cathay Pacific that used AI to avoid routes where contrails are likely to form, and it announced plans on September 7 to expand the effort across the Asia-Pacific region. The trial was the first of its kind in the region with a commercial airline, based on results from more than 80 flights that followed avoidance routes. The core of the system is to combine satellite imagery and weather forecasts to identify atmospheric layers where contrails are likely to persist and help aircraft steer clear of those areas. Because it adjusts altitude slightly within existing flight operations rather than waiting for new aircraft or fuel, the test is being viewed as a measure of how practical the approach could be in the field. The company said it supported avoidance decisions without significantly changing existing workflows by delivering predictive information to the cockpit in real time. Going forward, it plans to assess operational feasibility on more routes and under a variety of weather conditions, while also accumulating related research data.
